Patrick of Ireland: was he a Baptist? A Catholic saint? Something in between? This article examines the writings and biographies of “Saint Patrick” for clues as to the true identity of this legendary figure. We consider the veracity of the original sources; the nature of Patrick’s commission (was he sent by Pope Celestine, or simply by God?); his teachings and practices; and finally the time period in which he should be dated. Most of all, I trust we will all be challenged to imitate the godly spirit of this remarkable missionary.
The appendices contain the well-known hymn, “St. Patrick’s Breastplate,” attributed to him; a discussion of his missionary methods; and his creed.
